Visitor accommodation registration: Sprint update

Post by Gareth, Registration Lead, Welsh Revenue Authority

Every 2 weeks, we’ll share what our visitor accommodation registration team has been working on as we build the new service for visitor accommodation providers to register with the WRA.

The team works in 2-week sprints, where we focus on achieving a specific goal. This approach allows us to continuously improve the service and adapt our plans based on what we learn along the way.

These updates are part of our commitment to working in the open. We want to keep you informed about our progress and show how your feedback helps shape the service we’re building together.

What we did

Our mailing list is live

We’ve been developing a mailing list for visitor accommodation providers to stay updated on visitor accommodation registration and the visitor levy. We’ll be able to provide updates as new guidance is published and when registration opens.

The mailing list went to the Change Advisory Board (CAB) for approval. I’m pleased to say it passed and the mailing list went live on 22 October 2025. This has been a lot of hard work from the team, and it means we can now focus on other areas of the service.

We’ll be running a lessons learned session on the mailing list project, which we’ll share with you in a future update.

Building the service

We’ve been focusing on what we call the ‘happy path’ route – a simple journey for one visitor accommodation provider to register one premises. This has given us a lot of focus and means we’ve able to prioritise easily.

We’ve built several new screens this sprint and created the functionality for users to edit pages once they’ve completed them.

User research

Involving others is important to us. We tested the premises screens with camping, glamping sites and festivals in Cymraeg and English. We received lots of valuable feedback which we’re now collating to present at our next show and tell session. The main takeaway is that we have significant work to do to make the premises journey simpler and clearer.

Content and interaction design

Content and interaction design have worked hand-in-hand this sprint, designing screens together to create a more complete view of the user journey.

We’ve also looked at the entire ‘happy path’ and made content design changes to make it easier to navigate and more consistent throughout.

We’ve designed the premises management screen, which allows users to see all their premises in one place. We know most providers will only have 1 or 2 premises, but a significant minority will have multiple properties.

We’ll be testing the premises journey with users in the coming sprints and will continuously make improvements as we get more feedback.

What we’re doing next

We’ll continue focusing on the ‘happy path’ route. We have a few more screens to design and build before we’re happy with it.

We’re aiming to get an external test version of the service (not just screenshots) out to users for testing in the next few weeks. Our focus will be making sure we do this safely and securely.

Have your say

We’d love to hear your thoughts on what we’ve shared. If you have feedback or would like to take part in research, contact us on wracommunications@wra.gov.wales

Please note: Everything we share is work in progress and may change as we continue developing the service based on your feedback and what we learn through testing.
